Feature: Better Game Development Through Google Docs?

In Gamasutra's latest feature, hardened design doc veteran Chris Oltyan takes a look at how Google's suite of cloud-based productivity tools can make inroads into solving a lot of collaborative problems.

Though Oltyan writes he was initially impressed with a design doc versioning solution he'd worked with before: "it was probably the best document system I've ever been a part of" -- he notes that "It lasted all of two weeks in production before it became impossible to identify the latest design doc."

He had similar experiences with using SVN (a "horror") and wikis ("you will amaze yourself at the power of your own entropic force when it comes to a wiki.") However, Oltyan has since become convinced that Google Docs fills a void, and in today's feature he recounts his experiences, with online example documents, to explain and show exactly why.

Says Oltyan, "It makes everything incredibly easy, and destroys any barrier -- and thus any excuse -- for someone not to update a doc."

To find out exactly why Oltyan thinks game developers should consider the search giant's productivity solution, check out Gamasutra's latest feature, Game Dev Collaboration: Google Docs Style.

I have had a lot of success using Google Apps. Google docs is one the reason.

Another thing interesting is the number of other web applications available through their marketplace. MindMeister for instance is now fully part of our Google apps environment and very important tool to me...
