Nintendo 3DS dominates Japanese hardware charts, Vita sales continue to decline

The Nintendo 3DS once again topped the weekly Japanese hardware sales charts, while sales of the recently-launched PS Vita continued to decline.

For the weekend ended January 1, 2012, the numbers from tracking firm Media Create, as translated by NeoGAF, shows that the 3DS sold 197,952 units last week -- down from the 482,200 units sold in the previous week, as you'd expect, given that was the week leading up to Christmas Day.

Sony's Vita climbed the charts from position five to four, although its hardware sales dropped to 42,648 units from 72,479 units in the previous week.

However, Sony held three places in the top four, with the PlayStation 3 at number two with 67,199 sales, and the PSP at number three with a total of 62,746 units sold.

After the Wii's success in the previous week, it dropped down from position three to five, with 33,208 units sold. Down at the bottom, the Xbox 360 sold 2,453 units, while Nintendo's DS Lite scraped by with 28 units sold.

Below are the full sales rankings from Media Create for the week ended January 1, 2012. (The second chart lumps together sales of all models in a given line of hardware.)

There really is no surprise in the Vita numbers. First, are there even any killer "Japanese" games for the Vita? Second, that price point may be hurting as well. Thirdly, people are sick of proprietary memory cards. I think the Vita's memory prices have dropped, thank God, but there is just little reason to purchase one right now.

They should have probably launched Vita in the US---there are more system seller games for Western players than Japanese players. And the dual analog I think was more of a nod to western players than Japanese players---and the PSP is basically dead in the US but still thriving by the looks of it in Japan.

Quite a worrying development for the PSV. I game a lot on the go and both the PSP and DS are my favourite and most used consoles. It would be a shame this system fail so early in it's life cycle, as it does have a lot of great things going for it.

With a price drop looming, there's now almost no reason at all to buy one at launch.

How much is the PSvita in Japan? What will be its price in America?

$249 for the Wifi only. or $349 for the "First Edition Bundle" a WIFI/3g model a week early with a game and Memory card [little Deviants is the game] and a Case.

I'm Waiting a week to get the Wifi/3g model w/o a Game or Memory card so I can get my own.

IDK what it is in Japan, Sorry.

It seems like when ever Sony ever releases a new console or handheld ( be it the PS-1 to current), they never at all have that one killer app at launch. They seem to really go by and just push the notion that its a new Sony product rather than having the games speak for themselves at launch.

I think what this chart indicates is that gamers care a lot about hardware prices in Japan.

Sad for Vita, it has doubtless a lot of potential (which surley will be done justice to in mid near future) but Sony once again screwed a console launch up. Anyone remember the PS3s slow start and the years it took until it finally gained momentum ? Well, competition got plenty and harder, and there doesnt seem to be much room (the temporal kind) for bad strategies and poor managment decisions, the industry and consumer mob is hyper aware of the situation, just look at the mad numbers of comments everywhere regarding the Vita topic. Unlike it was in times when consoles were made for gamers and not for mainstream and didnt generate that much interest, Sony is under great pressure to act and change the not so rosy course things are taking as soon as possible.

My 2 cent ? Look at Nintendo, they had the balls for a bold correction of their course and guess what happend ?

Sony ! Yes, you over there !! Give us a 250$ (WiFi, for 3g I dont care) Bundle including a 4GB memory card and a game and Vita wont get tainted with the flaw of being a flop too early.
